We know that Autistic girls are under diagnosed and often mis-diagnosed, and consequently their mental and emotional health is often fragile because they frequently misunderstood. It is clear to us that we need ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge base in order to effectively navigate the complex social and educational spheres in which they live and manage the levels of anxiety and stress which can so often result in a range of self-harming behaviours and other mental health difficulties such as anxiety disorders, social phobias, self-harm and eating disorders.
In this session Tina will:
- Consider the need to ensure that adequate systems for recognising and assessing such difficulties are in place in the school context. The development of screening processes will be discussed and the importance of staff skills in this area highlighted.
- Highlight the importance of staff in schools being appropriately skilled and trained in identifying the symptoms of anxiety and stress in this population.
- She will also consider strategies for sharing quality information between schools and Child and Adolescent Mental Health services to ensure that appropriate support can be identified and implemented across both settings.
- There will also be a focus upon interventions to support the development of self- help and management strategies and the ways in which specific therapeutic approaches (CBT and tools from Positive Psychology) can be adapted for use with girls on the autistic continuum.
